Project MONAI — the Medical Open Network for Artificial Intelligence — is a freely available, community-supported, PyTorch-based framework for deep learning in healthcare imaging. The project, which was originally started by NVIDIA and King’s College London, aims to capture best practices of AI development for healthcare researchers.
In 2021, the MONAI team recognized that their website’s interface no longer represented the breadth of the project’s products and services. But because the company didn’t have the bandwidth or tools available to redesign the site in a timely manner on their own, they turned to Impekable.
The Solution
Impekable had previously partnered with MONAI’s co-founder on a project for rapids.ai. So when the company began seeking an agency partner to redesign its site, Impekable’s reputation for timeliness, efficiency, and dependability was already top of mind.
In addition, MONAI was specifically looking for an agency that could utilize components and design systems so that the team could manage and scale the website on their own in the future. Impekable’s long history of leading-edge UI design systems made us a natural fit for the project.
A Rapid Redesign Timeline
When we began working on MONAI’s website redesign, their team already had an ambitious schedule of projects and priorities lined up.
To avoid delaying these initiatives, we elected not to use a phased approach in order to release a new and updated website design at one time.
From Workshop to Winning Concept
At the outset of the project, we conducted a visual exploration and mood-boarding exercise with MONAI, which enabled both of our teams to align on key design preferences and priorities.
Following this exercise — and through a series of weekly progress meetings — we developed three visual design concepts for MONAI’s review.
Once the team made their final selection, we then adapted the winning concept to the new site’s Homepage, as well as its About, Get Started, Community, and Documentation pages.
Looking Forward for Future Scalability
Knowing that future scalability was a priority for MONAI, we created a UI Design Kit within Figma that included all of the necessary components — including colors, fonts, buttons, and more — to effectively create new pages (or enhance existing pages) utilizing the same branded style.
As a result, no matter how many designers MONAI has within its organization in the future, the company will still be able to efficiently scale and update the site on its own.
The Result
In just 6 weeks, Impekable visualized, designed, and delivered MONAI’s new website design. Since the team has taken the new site live, MONAI has seen an increase in site traffic and engagement due to the new design.
Further, Impekable’s Figma-based UI Design Kit has reduced the number of hours dedicated to website work by MONAI’s design team by 50%, allowing for more flexibility to other company priorities.
